We have 5 great tips to keeping your granite work surfaces in the best condition possible. They are explained in more detail below:
In most cases, clean soapy water is all that is required to clean a granite surface. Due to the glass like finish of granite, it may also sometimes be necessary to wipe the surface with a clean dry cloth afterwards to remove any streaking. In the event of dry food or sauces spilled onto the surface, it is quite safe to use a green sponge scouring pad or even very fine steel wool to clean.
The polish on a granite surface is not created by any varnishes or waxes. Instead, it is very similar to polished plate glass and subsequently; with normal household use granite tops should not require any form of additional polishing.
Granite is an extremely hard and durable natural product, thus it is forgiving and makes it very practical and desirable in a working. However whilst it is reasonably resistant to scratching and heat, it should still be treated with a certain amount of respect. Despite this, spillages should be wiped as soon as possible. The surface should not be used as a cutting board, and care should be taken with hot fats or hot pans as they may have fats or oils underneath.
Most granite colours do not readily absorb liquids; however a stain stop sealer will be applied before the stone leaves our workshop for installation. Despite this, we also recommend that you periodically apply a stain stop. This will also enhance the natural shine of the surface, protect against abrasives, and leave the tops more resistant to stains caused by acid, for example, colourful food dyes, cola, tea, coffee and citric juices.
Granite like stone has a remarkable compressive strength. It does not however have any significant tensile strength, so any large holes that may be cut to accommodate sinks and hobs, should be considered VULNERABLE areas. Such areas should not be stood on or sat on for any reason or purpose in order to prevent cracking the granite at its point of least resistance.
